If you've recently purchased an electric vehicle — or are considering one — you've probably heard about EV charging stations. But what exactly are they, how do they work, and what do you actually need for your home or business? This guide covers everything from the basics to the details that matter when making a decision.

What Is an EV Charging Station?

An EV charging station (also called an EVSE — Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment) is a device that supplies electrical energy to charge the battery of an electric vehicle. Unlike a standard household outlet, a charging station is purpose-built for EV charging: it includes safety protections, communication capabilities, and a standardised connector for your vehicle.

Types of EV Chargers

Level 1 (Slow): Standard household outlet charging at 2.3kW. Very slow — adding only 15–20km of range per hour. Generally not recommended as a primary charging solution.

Level 2 (AC Fast): The most common home and workplace solution. Delivers 7.4kW (single-phase) or up to 22kW (three-phase). Charges most EVs fully overnight. This is what Greems specialises in managing.

Level 3 (DC Fast/Rapid): Public fast chargers delivering 50kW–350kW. Charges an EV to 80% in 20–45 minutes. Expensive to install and operate — suited to high-traffic public locations.

Smart vs Dumb Chargers

A basic charger simply delivers power. A smart charger — the kind Greems manages — communicates with a central management system via the OCPP protocol, enabling remote control, scheduling, energy monitoring, load balancing, and per-session billing. For any multi-user or commercial application, smart chargers are the only viable choice.

Why You Need a Management Platform

A charging station alone is just hardware. The real value comes from the software layer — which is where Greems comes in. Greems connects your chargers, manages load, tracks energy consumption, handles billing, and provides real-time visibility across every charger in your network, from a single dashboard.
