Home EV Charger Installation: A Step-by-Step Guide

Installing a home EV charger is one of the best investments an electric vehicle owner can make. The process is straightforward when planned correctly — here's a step-by-step overview of what a standard residential installation involves, and how to make sure yours goes smoothly.

Step 1: Site Assessment

Before any work begins, a qualified electrician assesses your home's electrical panel capacity, identifies the optimal cable route to your parking space, and checks network connectivity for smart charger communication. This assessment determines the exact scope of work and prevents surprises during installation.

Step 2: Electrical Preparation

A dedicated circuit is run from your main panel to the charger location. This includes appropriate cable sizing for the charger's rated current, a dedicated RCD for safety, and weatherproof conduit for any outdoor sections. In most homes this is straightforward; occasionally a panel upgrade is required if capacity is insufficient.

Step 3: Charger Mounting & Wiring

The charger unit is mounted at the agreed location — typically on a wall at a height convenient for your vehicle's charging port. The electrician makes the final electrical connections and ensures everything is mechanically secure and weatherproofed.

Step 4: Commissioning on Greems

For smart OCPP chargers, the final step is registration and commissioning on the Greems platform. The charger connects to your WiFi or cellular network, is registered to your account, and is tested for remote communication. From this point you have full visibility, scheduling, and energy monitoring through the Greems dashboard.
